Advent 2009
Advent
Advent a time of new beginning, a time of expectations, a time of hope as we look into a new church year and prepare for Christmas. Somehow this year we are very much in need of hope. There have been so many difficult situations during this year. It seems as if the words of Jesus in the Gospel for this week end are coming to pass: "and on earth distress among nations". There is certainly distress resulting from the deep recession and during the last weeks the weather and flooding. Somehow crises like we are seeing can bring out the best in people but unfortunately the worst in some. The present situation calls for solidarity and for a willingness to share the burden and to reach out to those most in need. The help agencies such as the St. Vincent de Paul Society are telling us of unprecedented demands on their help. The IFA and sister organisations are even finding themselves involved in "aid" and by accounts the response is very generous.Maybe all this helps us to focus on Christmas and the real meaning of what we celebrate. The coming of the Christ Child brought a message of Love. The full meaning of that love was not just spoken of in the teaching of Jesus but was lived out in every moment of his life. The story of his birth which we celebrate in the Bethlehem event is symbolic of the One who "emptied himself .. being born in human likeness" and who "humbled himself and became obedient". His whole life was sacrifice. Christmas a time of presents and celebration can also be a time of "sacrifice" if we choose gifts thoughtfully. Trocaire and similar agencies give us great suggestions for gifts.
