The Paschal Mystery
We are just three weeks away from celebrating the most important event for all Christians, who follow the Latin Rite, throughout the world to remember the Death and Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. For the past weeks we have been preparing ourselves, through our Lenten Fast, for this great celebration. We will begin our Easter Triduum on Holy Thursday with the Mass of the Last Supper. At this supper on the night was betrayed, the Lord Jesus, loving those who were his own in the world even to the end, offered his body and blood to the Father under the appearance s of bread and wine and gave them to the apostles to eat and drink. On Good Friday morning we will recall the story of Jesus' suffering and death by following the Way of the Cross. We also have the celebration of the Lord's Passion when we will read St. John's account of the Passion and reflectively think about John's emphasis on Jesus' obedience to the Father's will. And the kingship of Jesus is asserted; the the crucifixion is a victory, the hour of death is also the hour of triumph. Christ gives his life. He is 'lifted up' on the cross, but willingly, and only in order to enter into his glory, a glory that is made visible even in this world to the confusion of unbelievers and ending in the defeat of Satan once and for all' (New Jerusalem Bible). On Holy Saturday Night we will celebrate the Easter Vigil. This is the night when the Church keeps vigil, waiting for the resurrection of the Lord. This Passover Vigil, in which the Hebrews kept watch for the Lord's Passover which was to free them from Slavery, prefigured the true Pasch of Christ that was to come. For the resurrection of Christ, in which he broke the chains of death and rose triumphant from the grave, is the foundation of our faith and hope and through Baptism and Confirmation we are inserted into the paschal mystery of Christ, dying, buried and raised with him, and with him we shall also reignX
