Kilbrittain Parish Bulletin
Autumn 2010
Handing on the Faith.
Handing on the faith is always a challenge and especially to families with growing children. People are very conscious of a change in young peoples attitude to faith and to religion. Many parents agonise about their children's faith and wonder what more they can do. Pope Benedict in his Pastoral Letter to the Catholics of Ireland addresses young people. "It is in the Church (the faith community) that you will find Jesus Christ. He loves you and has offered himself on the cross for you. Seek a personal relationship with him within the communion of his Church." We the adult church have a task in helping young people to "find Jesus". This is really a task of sharing our own faith with them. The Pope in his letter addresses the whole Christian community on this task, not just parents. "In our increasing secularised society, .. We need to find new ways to pass on to young people the beauty and richness of friendship with Jesus Christ in the communion of his Church. In confronting the present crisis ... a new vision is needed, to inspire present and future generations to treasure the gift of our common faith. By walking the path marked out by the gospel, by observing the commandments and by conforming your lives ever more closely to the person of Jesus Christ, you will surely experience the profound renewal that is so urgently needed at this time." The Pope encourages us all to persevere on that path of spiritual renewal. There have been various helps to that renewal over the years. I think the changes that have invited us more deeply into our Sunday Mass have been a very great help. However we need to go farther that that. We need to get involved actively in our faith community. The Parish Assemblies and Pastoral Area initiatives are a movement in that direction. There are also many offers of ongoing faith education available.
